“Sarah Crawford was a key to the success of the Wisconsin Youth Leadership Academy (2011-2013). WYLA identified and worked with disadvantaged teens to help them discover their own leadership potential. Numerous times I watched Sarah build trust with our students as she helped them grow the levels of their self-confidence, as they blossomed into the best versions of themselves. She knew how ask probing questions that inspired our youth to set aside their self-doubts, as they in turn sought to build the character strengths of their peers. The first time I witnessed Sarah do this was a time I will never forget. In a group setting, she openly made herself vulnerable, sharing one of her most challenging personal struggles. Through this, she built trust within the group, setting the example for critical self-examination, which the students would need in their journeys to leadership. Many WYLA students and staff were deeply moved by the story of Sarah’s journey. Soon, bonds were developed among all within WYLA. The teens found the courage to inspire others in acts and initiatives that were heavily altruistic. As I think about this, I realize this is Servant Leadership at its best. And it started with Sarah. I witnessed this process numerous times over the course of Sarah’s time as a life coach for teens with WYLA. She continues to inspire me with her compassion and love for others. Sarah Crawford is a special, unique human being. My professional and personal lives have benefited immensely because of her.”
